Tendon repair is a surgical procedure used to treat a torn or severed tendon. Tendons are the soft, connective tissue that binds the muscle to the bone. When a muscle is contracted in movement, it pulls on the tendon, which because they’re connected, moves the joint.
When tendons are torn or cut, movement is restricted or completely impossible and can cause weakness in the joint or pain.
Common causes of tendon damage are:
Tears– due to an injury that results in the tendon being removed from the bone
Arthritis – most commonly rheumatoid arthritis which causes severe inflammation involving the tendon and causing rupture or tears
Traumatic injury that results in a laceration or cut that goes through the skin and cuts into the tendon.
